Appointments & Referrals

What conditions do you treat?
All hand and wrist conditions, including carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger, De Quervain’s tenosynovitis, Dupuytren’s, arthritis, tendon and ligament injuries, and wrist fractures.

Do I need a GP referral?
Self-pay patients do not require a referral. Insured patients may need one depending on their policy – please check with your insurer. Insured patients must have obtained authorisation from their insurer.

Can I book directly as a self-pay patient?
Yes. You can book an appointment without a GP referral at any of Mr Fawdington’s clinics.

Where are clinics held?
Appointments are available at:

  • The Harborne Hospital – HCA, Birmingham
  • Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital
  • The Priory Hospital, Birmingham

Do you see NHS patients privately?

Yes. Many patients treated by Mr Fawdington in the NHS choose to see him privately for quicker access or follow-up.

How long are appointments?
Initial consultations usually last 15-20 minutes for assessment and discussion of treatment options. Follow-ups 10 minutes. Complex cases may take longer.

What happens at my first appointment?
A full history and examination will be carried out. You may have an X-ray the same day, although we’ll need to re-book you when the report is available. For injections we routinely plan these for a second visit so that authorisation can be obtained or a quote generated.

Will I need scans or tests?
Sometimes. We may arrange X-rays, ultrasound, nerve conduction studies or MRI scans, depending on your symptoms and examination findings.

Do you offer injections in clinic?
Yes – where appropriate we can perform corticosteroid injections after discussing risks, benefits and alternatives. Usually you will be booked back into clinic with a new appointment so that there is enough time to complete it.

What are the options if I need surgery?
Most procedures are day cases with local or regional anaesthesia. We’ll explain recovery timelines, therapy and follow-up.

Insurance & Payment

Which insurers are recognised?
Mr Fawdington is recognised by all major insurers including Bupa, AXA, Aviva, Healix, Vitality, and WPA. Have your membership and authorisation number ready when booking.

What if I am self-funding?
Self-pay patients can book directly. Quotes are provided before any procedure so you know exactly what is included.

What is covered by my insurance?
Consultations, imaging, surgery, and follow-ups are usually covered once authorised. Please confirm with your insurer before booking.

How do I get a quote if I’m self-funding?
After the initial consultation if you require further treatment, please contact the secretary for a procedure code. With this code you will be able to contact the hospital and ask them for a quote.

Can I pay by card or bank transfer?
Yes. You can pay securely via Medserv our billing company who accept all major credit cards or directly through Mr Fawdington’s practice.

Treatment & Recovery

What happens if I need surgery?
Your options will be explained in full. Most hand and wrist operations are day-case procedures performed under local or regional anaesthetic. You’ll go home the same day. See Surgery – What to Expect.

How long will I be off work?
It depends on your procedure and occupation. Light work may resume in 1–2 weeks after minor procedures, while heavy manual jobs may need 6–12 weeks. See Recovery & Return to Work.

When can I drive again?
Once you can control your vehicle safely and perform an emergency stop without pain. Usually 1-2 weeks after minor surgery; longer after complex wrist operations. See Driving after Surgery.

When can I fly after surgery?
Short flights are generally safe after 1–2 weeks for minor procedures; long-haul flights should be delayed ideally 6 weeks. See Fit to Fly.

Will I need physiotherapy?
Some operations require hand therapy. You’ll receive specific instructions or a referral where needed. See Exercises and Rehabilitation.

What if I notice swelling or bruising?
Mild swelling is common. Elevate the hand and move your fingers regularly. Contact the clinic if swelling worsens or you develop redness or heat. See Swelling & Bruising.

Who do I contact if I have concerns?
Email or phone Mr Fawdington’s secretary (Vikki Hibbert – 07510 417479) for clinical concerns or appointment queries.

Urgent medical issues should be directed to your nearest Accident & Emergency (A&E) department or NHS 111.

If you’re experiencing hand and wrist or related symptoms, we can confirm the cause and tailor a plan – often starting with splints/hand therapy and exercises, with medicines, injections or surgery only where appropriate.

This page provides general information and is not a substitute for individual medical advice.

For emergencies (severe/new weakness, spreading infection, uncontrolled pain, significant injury) call 999, or use NHS 111 for urgent guidance.
