Air travel soon after hand or wrist surgery can increase swelling and discomfort due to changes in cabin pressure and prolonged periods of immobility.
As a general rule:
- Short flights: usually safe after 1-2 weeks for minor procedures, once wounds have healed and the hand can be elevated easily.
- Long-haul flights: delay for at least 3-4 weeks, or longer if you have ongoing swelling, a cast, or K-wires in place.
You should avoid flying if you have:
- An open wound or unhealed surgical site.
- Metal pins or external fixators that have not yet been removed.
- Active infection or severe swelling.
To minimise swelling:
- Keep your hand elevated during the flight (use a small pillow, armrest or sling).
- Move fingers regularly and perform gentle hand exercises.
- Stay hydrated and avoid alcohol.
Travel Insurance:
Ensure your insurer is aware of your recent surgery. Some policies may exclude claims arising from recent procedures unless declared i.e. pre-existing conditions.
Fit to Fly Certificate:
Some airlines may ask for a Doctor’s note stating that you are fit fly. Unfortunately, this cannot be provided because if the plane did have to make an emergency landing, then the Doctor would be liable for all of the costs (e.g. landing fees, fuel, other passenger accommodation, transport costs and travel delays).
Summary: Flying too soon can worsen swelling and discomfort. Always check with your surgeon if you plan to fly within 4 weeks of your operation. Flying after 6 weeks is preferred in most cases and is subject to the above caveats.
If you’re experiencing hand and wrist or related symptoms, we can confirm the cause and tailor a plan – often starting with splints/hand therapy and exercises, with medicines, injections or surgery only where appropriate.
