Hand & Wrist Splints
Splints and supports are commonly used in the management of wrist, thumb and finger conditions. They may help to limit painful movement, reduce strain on irritated structures and provide short-term support during recovery from injury or surgery.
A well-chosen splint can be useful when used alongside activity modification and, where appropriate, hand therapy. Some splints are intended to hold a joint in a neutral or protected position, while others provide light compression and support during daily activities.
Examples include wrist splints used for carpal tunnel symptoms or wrist sprains, wrist splints with thumb extensions used for thumb base arthritis or De Quervain’s tenosynovitis, and finger splints used for mallet injuries or finger fractures. Over-reliance on splints can lead to stiffness, so they are usually used for a specific indication rather than continuously.
When to seek medical advice
If symptoms are worsening, there is numbness or weakness, or there is concern about fracture, tendon injury or a joint that will not move normally, medical review is advised.
