Hot & Cold Therapy

Heat and cold are frequently used as simple supportive measures for pain, swelling and stiffness around the hand and wrist. Cold is often used after recent strain or to calm a flare-up, while heat is often used for stiffness or chronic discomfort.

The aim is not to treat the underlying diagnosis directly but to provide symptom relief and to make exercises or daily activities easier to tolerate. Reusable packs and wraps are often the most practical option.

Cold should not be applied directly to the skin, and heat should be warm rather than uncomfortably hot.

When to seek medical advice
If swelling is persistent, pain is severe, or symptoms are worsening despite simple measures, a proper clinical assessment is preferable to repeated self-treatment.
