Scar & Skin Care

Scar and skin care products can be useful after surgery or injury once the wound has healed sufficiently and dressing advice allows transition to scar management or skin care. Silicone-based products are commonly used for mature or healing scars, while simple dressings and creams or oils may be useful for minor wound protection.

This category can also include moisturisers and skin-protection products, particularly where skin becomes dry beneath splints or after repeated washing. The overall aim is to support skin comfort and, where appropriate, scar maturation.

For wounds that are not healing normally, products should not replace proper clinical review.

When to seek medical advice
If there is redness, discharge, increasing pain, bleeding, wound breakdown or concern about infection, medical advice should be sought rather than relying on self-care products alone.
  • The items below are examples of commonly available products. They are not personalised recommendations and equivalent items from other suppliers may be suitable.
  • Patients should check product descriptions, sizing information and customer reviews, and should compare alternatives before purchasing.

Vaseline Petroleum Jelly

Best for: Early wound healing as it prevents dressings from sticking

Wounds that are delicate or weep slightly and stick to the overlying dressing. This keeps the wound moist and prevents it sticking to the dressing.

E45 Lotion

Best for: Dry skin – particularly when coming out of cast or bandages

Suitable for dry and sensitive skin. It is un-perfumed, so won’t sting if the skin is cracked or broken.

Bio Oil

Best for: Wounds that have healed i.e. sutures removed

Used to reduce the appearance of scars or stretch marks.

Silicone Scar Gel

Best for: Wounds that have fully healed

A convenient alternative where a sheet is impractical.

Silicone Scar Tape

Best for: Wounds that have fully healed

Often used once the wound is healed to help soften and flatten a scar.
